The Public Safety Academy at North Florida Community is one of forty one training centers approved by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission to train basic recruits in law enforcement, corrections, recertification programs, and continuing workforce education.
Acceptance in the programs is limited to those meeting requirements established by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission, North Florida Community College, the Public Safety Academy, and our Criminal Justice Advisory Board.
Entrance requirements for basic recruit training:
- Official, sealed, transcript showing high school diploma or GED (This program is not eligible for dual enrollment).
- United States citizenship.
- Successful completion of the Florida Basic Abilities Test for the discipline in which the student will be trained.
- Sponsorship by a law enforcement or corrections agency is required for basic recruit programs. Students may be employed directly or merely sponsored through a background check conducted by agencies in the State of Florida. Sponsorship may not guarantee employment or payment of student fees.
- Submission of fingerprints to FCIC/NCIC.
- Good moral character, having no felony convictions or misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, moral turpitude or domestic violence. (Arrests or convictions during training may result in dismissal from the program.)
- Honorable discharge from military service (if applicant has served in the military).
- Adequate physical conditioning to fulfill course requirements as evidenced by a physical examination by a physician. (No exceptions are allowed.)
- Drug screening will be required for entrance into the program. Random drug screens may be conducted throughout the program. (No exceptions are allowed.)
- All recruits must be exposed to pepper gas. (No exceptions are allowed.)
- To begin the Academy, students must be 18 years of age. Graduates must be 19 years of age to be certified.
Recruits attending Academy programs must abide by the rules set forth in the Academy Recruit Manual. The manual details attendance, grade, and behavior requirements. Violations of rules may result in disciplinary action up to and including dismissal from the Academy.
Uniforms are required and must be worn as outlined in the Academy Recruit Manual.
