North Florida Community College is looking for talented actors, actresses, singers, backstage assistants, and children to audition and volunteer for its Community Theatre production of Han Christian Anderson’s popular children’s story The Little Mermaid. Open auditions will be held Saturday, Nov. 3 at NFCC’s Van H. Priest Auditorium beginning at 2 p.m.
The script calls for a number of roles including the Mermaid Princess and her friends, King Neptune and his court, the wicked Queen Odessa, the Prince and a host of under the sea characters. With the performance scheduled for Jan. 26, 2013, the main characters will begin weekly practice in November. Children, ages six and up, are invited to audition for sea character roles; these roles will begin practice just a short time before the performance in January.
“This is going to be a fun community performance,” said Denise Bell, NFCC Community Theatre Coordinator. “We are looking forward to the larger cast and having children from the community involved in this performance. I encourage anyone who is interested in being on stage or helping backstage to audition on Nov. 3.”
About the play: As the play begins, in the magical Kingdom of the Underwater Deep, a beautiful Mermaid Princess longs to become a human being. During a frightful shipwreck a Prince is tossed in the sea and rescued by the Mermaid Princess. When she sings him a haunting lullaby he falls in love with the girl with the beautiful, musical voice. The Little Mermaid defies her father the Sea King and makes a pact with Queen Odessa, trading her voice to become human. Her friends, Aruba and Finny, are at her side through the adventure providing humor and fun to this children's musical play of the beloved Hans Christian Andersen story.
