NFCC, Jefferson County 4-H host STEM Forum at Jefferson Elementary

NFCC and Jefferson County 4-H led a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Forum for Jefferson Elementary School 5th graders on March 22. The date was significant since it was the first calendar day for the world-wide recording day for the World Water Monitoring Challenge, a challenge program that tests water from around the world for turbidity (cloudiness), pH (acidity), dissolved oxygen, and temperature.

Jefferson Elementary 5th graders teamed up with NFCC students from the college’s Save Our Animal Resources (S.O.A.R.) ecology club and Man and the Environment class to learn about the environment and our effect on the environment, especially water quality. NFCC students used teaching materials related to the Sunshine State Standards and benchmarks. The students and teachers then moved outside to test samples of Jefferson County water collected by John Lilly, Jefferson County Extension Director. The students conducted water tests, collected data and made conclusions on what they recorded. They found that the tested water was healthy for fish and aquatic insects. Results were posted on the World Water Monitoring Challenge web site.

“Our students came away with a sense of accomplishment of helping these children and making a difference,” said Bonnie Littlefield, NFCC science instructor and event coordinator. “One of our students said that it was exciting to see the children’s faces light up when they learned one of the concepts and were able to answer the questions."

NFCC students were able to work with three separate 5th grade classes at Jefferson Elementary School. The event was a joint collaboration between Jefferson Elementary, NFCC and the Jefferson County Extension Office.

“The 5th grade students enjoyed the activity so much that we want to do it again each year,” said Jefferson Elementary teacher Nancy Whitty. “The three classes enjoyed making big "Thank You" cards to show their appreciation for spending the day with them."

Florida Collection Dedication

The Staff of North Florida Community College’s Marshall Hamilton Library invites the public to the dedication of the Library’s Florida Collection in memory of Joseph “Joe” Alexander Akerman, Jr. The dedication ceremony will be held at the NFCC Library (NFCC campus, Bldg. 4) on Sunday, April 21 at 2:30 p.m. A reception will follow.

“In honor of Mr. Akerman’s long career and dedication to NFCC, and in honor of his accomplished writing career, the Library staff is proud to dedicate its Florida Collection in his memory,” said Kay Hogan, Director of Library Services at NFCC.

Akerman began his teaching career at NFCC in 1965 and taught several generations of students before retiring in 2009. He was a dedicated instructor of history and while at the college received numerous awards for his writings. In 1976 the Florida Cattleman’s Association published Akerman’s first book, “A History of the Florida Cattle Industry.” This was followed by “American Brahman” in 1982. In 2003, Akerman and his son Mark collaborated on “Jacob Summerlin, King of the Crackers,” published by the Florida Historical Society. This book won the Florida Historical Society’s prestigious Charlton Tebeau Award for its historical value in 2005. In 2004, Akerman received the Dorothy Dodd Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Historical Society. He wrote numerous articles and gave lectures all over Florida on his books and Florida History in general.

Akerman once said that “All American men and boys are cowboys at heart.” Akerman was a professor, author, artist, cowboy and friend to many. The NFCC Library staff invites the community to stop by April 21 and help honor the memory of Joseph Alexander Akerman, Jr.

Artist Series Core Ensemble

NFCC Artist Series…

Core Ensemble performs chamber music theatre piece Thursday, March 21 at NFCC

Spirituals, jazz and concert music combined with a theatrical performance celebrating Zora Neale Hurston, Sojourner Truth, Clementine Hunter and Fannie Lou Hamer

North Florida Community College, in partnership with Nu Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., presents the Core Ensemble’s music theatre production Ain’t I a Woman! on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at Van H. Priest Auditorium. The performance, combining chamber music with theatrical narrative, celebrates the life and times of four famous African American women: novelist and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, ex-slave and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, folk artist Clementine Hunter, and civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer. The musical score is drawn from the heartfelt spirituals and blues of the Deep South, the urban vitality of the Jazz Age, and contemporary concert music by African American composers such as Charles Mingus, Thelonius Monk, Max Roach and Diane Monroe.

Actress Shinnerrie Jackson portrays Hurston, Truth, Hunter and Hamer on stage while interacting with the musical trio of cello, piano and percussion performed by the Core Ensemble’s Michael Parola, Tahirah Whittington and Cyrus von Hochstetter. In reviews of Ain’t I a Woman!, Paul Olsen of Augustana College said “The humor, drama and music were spellbinding.” Phil Funkenbush of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum said “I sat there in awe of how the music, the words, the acting were integrated into what I considered pure theatre!” Since 1993, the Core Ensemble has toured in every region of the United States and internationally to Australia, England, Russia, Ukraine and the British Virgin Islands. The Core Ensemble is currently a featured artist on the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs State Touring Program.

Patient Care Technician program accepting applications

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) program at North Florida Community College announces the opening of its application period for Fall Term 2013. Now is the time to enroll and take care of application, testing and program entrance requirements. Classes begin Aug. 26 and the deadline to apply for admission is June 1.

NFCC’s PCT program prepares students to provide direct patient care in a variety of healthcare environments. PCT curriculum also includes the Home Health Aid component and current Labor Market statistics report that the Home Health Aid has the largest percent of projected growth in health care support occupations through 2019.

While working under the supervision of a registered nurse, patient care technicians often have more contact with patients than any other healthcare team member. Students receive additional training as assistants in the care of the elderly, physical and respiratory therapy and may also receive additional training in performance of electrocardiograms and phlebotomy. Most PCT’s seek certification as a certified nursing assistant (CNA). Graduates may also apply to take a national certification examination to become certified patient care technician.

In order to be considered for admission into NFCC’s PCT program, individuals must have a high school diploma or GED and be at least 18-years-old. Students are required to complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) prior to making application to enter the program. The TABE is given regularly at the NFCC campus and may be scheduled by calling (850) 973-9451.

Nursing and Allied Health staff and faculty are available to help prospective students through the enrollment process; contact Debbie Bass at (850) 973-1662 or bassd@nfcc.edu. More details about NFCC’s Allied Health programs and entrance requirements are available at www.nfcc.edu/programs-of-study.
