Poetry on Stage 2014

NFCC students take the stage April 23 during Poetry on Stage event

North Florida Community College Freshmen English II students will take part in a Poetry on Stage event on April 23 at 2 p.m. at the NFCC Fine Arts Auditorium (Bldg. 10). According to instructor Rose Knox the students have been studying various types of literature this term as well as studying the short story genre andanalyzing drama and poems. As part of this study, they will recite a poem of their choice on April 23 in front of their fellow students and others wishing to attend. The event is open to the public.

“They are learning that ‘putting words to heart’ is a powerful intellectual and creative experience,” said Knox. “Many students have never been asked to memorize a poem, so they are very excited about the prospect of performing.”

Students have also been perusing a site called Poetry Out Loud that models techniques of live poetry performance. The site critiques aspects of oral interpretation and the videos give students a good model to follow.

“I want them to know the power of words, the power of poetry,” said Knox.
NFCC invites the community to stop by April 23 for the Poetry on Stage student poetry reading.
