Organic Gardening 101 - Building Healthy Soil

Organic Gardening 101 Short Courses available August through May

NFCC offers series of one-day courses in organic gardening

Become a better backyard gardener with short courses on sustainable vegetable production at North Florida Community College’s Green Industries Institute in Monticello, Fla. Ten different three-hour courses will be offered between August 2011 and May 2012. Each class is $25 per session and takes place from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. on the third Saturday of the month. Classes can be taken independently or as a series. 

Classes will be held at NFCC Green Industries Institute, located at 2729 W. Washington St in Monticello, Fla. Classes are open to the general public. Advance registration is required. Registration forms are available online at www.nfcc.edu/green-industries. Please contact course instructor Claire Mitchell at mitchellc@nfcc.edu for more information. 

Organic Gardening 101 classes include:

August 20 Cool Season Crop Planning Time to start thinking about your fall garden. Learn which plants grow best through our mild winters
September 17 Seed Starting Don’t depend on the nurseries to choose your veggies for you! Learn different techniques to grow your own starts.
October 22 Cover Cropping Build up your soil with beneficial cover crops this winter.
November 19 Season Extension Don’t let winter keep you from growing. Learn about low tunnels and cold frames to become a four-season gardener.
December 17 Tools for the Small Farm and Harvesting Techniques Learn which tools are best for small scale growing, and how to harvest and store your food for maximum freshness.
January 21 Warm Season Crop Planning Get a head start on your spring garden.  Grab your seed catalogs and you start planning.
February 18 Building Healthy Soil Feed the soil, not the plant. Learn about composting and vermiculture, both are essential for healthy gardens.
March 17 Building Raised Beds with Micro-irrigation Expand your garden with raised beds, and learn to install micro-irrigation to keep them watered.
April 21 Window Boxes and Container Gardening Plant a garden, no matter how small. Get big results from small containers.
May 19 Organic Pest, Disease and Weed Control Learn the signs of plant distress, and best practices for prevention and treatment.
