Marie Guest presents to faculty and staff North Florida Community College Business Instructor and Business Club advisor Marie Guest recently presented research on “Student Self-Assessment in Introductory Economics at a Community College” to NFCC Faculty and staff. Guest gave the presentation to co-workers as part of the requirements to complete the Education Specialist degree in Instructional Technology at Valdosta State University. Guest will present her research again January 4, 2008 at the College Teaching Conference in Orlando, Fl., which will publish her findings in its refereed conference proceedings. Guest is a resident of Lake Park, Ga.

McCauley “decodes” literature at English conference Dr. Barbara McCauley, English professor at NFCC, was a guest presenter at the Florida College English Association Nov. 8 and 9 in Ft. Pierce, Fla. McCauley’s presentation, entitled, “Decoding Literature,” proposed to English faculty that it is important for college students to understand how instructors interpret literature in the classroom by incorporating text, knowledge of or research on the background and individual priorities and values. McCauley said, “It was a great conference and I had the chance to connect with colleagues from all over the state.” The conference brings together English instructors from across the higher education spectrum. NFCC spotlights Maria Greene You’ll find Maria Greene at the NFCC owned Wardlaw-Smith-Goza Mansion during the Christmas season, Down Home Days and other special occasions. It’s her job to make sure this valuable piece of history is shown in its best light and to always protect that value. She’s the person behind the beautiful make-over each Christmas season when the mansion glows with festive beauty provided by many volunteers. This event draws hundreds of people from all over during the annual Christmas open house of the Greek revival style pre-Civil War home. Bucher plays in “Gift of Life” Golf Classic Gerri Bucher, executive director of government relations and special projects at NFCC, played in the 12th annual Nick Oelrich “Gift of Life” Golf Classic in Gainesville, Fla., Nov 9, 2007. This is the second year Bucher has participated in the tournament named after state Senator and former Sheriff Stephen M. Oelrich’s son, Nick, an organ and tissue donor, who saved or enhanced the lives of one hundred and eight people. Proceeds from the tournament go to the National Sheriffs’ Association’s Gift of Life Foundation. From this tournament the Gift of Life Foundation will make a contribution to LifeQuest Organ Recovery Services, a part of Shands Healthcare, Gainesville, Fla. For more information

Burkart discusses Baha'i faith with students North Florida Community College Music Instructor Dr. Rebecca Burkart visited NFCC’s World Religions class to discuss her Baha’i faith, which places an emphasis on the oneness of mankind and practices on the common foundations of all religions.
Burkart, her husband Arnold and daughter Laurel reside in Monticello, Ga.
Burkart is responsible for instructing and directing of North Florida Community College's Sentienl Singers, Community Chorus and Jazz Ensemble.

NFCC President Morris Steen to retire During his six year tenure as NFCC, Morris G. Steen Jr. saw NFCC ranked sixth in the nation among community colleges and led the college to its first new construction in 40 years. After having overseen more accomplishments at NFCC than imaginable, including re-connecting NFCC to the six-county community it serves, Steen has announced he will retire in the summer of 2008. Steen was inaugurated into the presidency April 28, 2002 and immediately began directing a total revamping of the college’s programs. The former director of NFCC's adult, vocational and continuing education, Steen was interim president from June 2001 until April 2002. For more information

Karen Pickles vies for state association VP position Madison resident and computer science instructor Karen Todd Pickles is in the running as a vice-president with the Florida Association of Community Colleges (FACC), the statewide organization that represents Florida’s 28 public community colleges. Pickles, business instructor at NFCC who is also a doctorial student, will seek the elected position during the Nov. 13-16 FACC statewide convention in Orlando. She is seeking the position of vice-president elect of commissions. She has been with NFCC since 1993 and a member of FACC since 1999. Pickles currently serves as NFCC’s FACC chapter president. Barden holds one woman show at NFCC Art Gallery The works of Lisa Barden, art instructor at North Florida Community College, will be featured in a one woman show, “Subtle Reflections,” during October in the NFCC Art Gallery, Madison, Fla. Barden’s exhibit explores the subtlety and nuances of reflections - on one’s environment, experiences and emotions. “My work reflects my interest in capturing subtle moments in time that are often overlooked. Rather than depicting specific experiences or personal narratives, I investigate patterns of light and shadow and subtle colors trying to find a visual translation for the way that the world is commonly experienced at an introspective level,” said Barden. NFCC’s Grosskopf presents paper conference John Grosskopf, Vice President of Academic Affairs at NFCC, will conduct a workshop at the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Annual Meeting, December 11 in New Orleans, LA. The workshop proposal, entitled “Constructing the Objective-Based Course Syllabus,” received favorable reviews as being relevant and innovative. “Being accepted as a presenter demonstrates that NFCC is at the cutting edge of teaching and learning effectiveness. The workshop may serve as a model of quality instruction for other institutions,” said Grosskopf. The SACS Commission on Colleges is the accrediting agency for 11 southern states, as well as Latin America.

Taylor elected director of state association Susan Taylor, English instructor at North Florida Community College, has been elected for a two-year term to the Board of Directors of the Florida Developmental Education Association. She had formerly held a temporary appointment as a director.
The Florida Developmental Education Association works to improve developmental education practice and delivery to Florida students.
Taylor is a doctoral student in reading and language arts at Florida State University.

Moffses to participate in Cisco anniversary event Cisco Learning Institute has issued an invitation to Thomas Moffses, Jr. of NFCC to the Cisco Networking Academy 10th Anniversary Salute in Washington, DC on October 2-3, 2007. Moffses is the director of the Cisco Academy Training Center at NFCC. The event will recognize the extraordinary impact the Cisco Networking Academy has made "educating the architects of the networked economy" in the U.S. over the past decade. SACS taps Brown for leadership training Doug Brown, Dean of Recruitment, Retention and Grants, has been invited to participate in committee leader training by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The March workshop is a requirement for those identified as potential leaders for focused or comprehensive peer review committees for the Commission on Colleges. The invitation noted Brown’s “professional expertise, experience, integrity, and capacity” for leadership. Brown has participated in SACS peer review visits to a number of other colleges the past few years. The Commission on Colleges of SACS is the agency which periodically reviews and certifies accreditation of NFCC to award the associate degree.

Richardson, Bass and Culpepper earn master degrees The Allied Health Department of North Florida Community College announced that nursing instructors Marcia Bass, Angela Culpepper and Michelle Richardson have been awarded M.S. degrees in Nursing Education from Florida State University. The three, teachers in the registered nursing program, are graduates of . FSU’s online MSN Nurse Educator program, which is especially designed to allow the working nurse to integrate school into an already busy lifestyle. NFCC’s College Advancement team wins creativity awards The public relations and publications arm of North Florida Community College has once again garnered awards for excellence in producing marketing materials. The Office of College Advancement received Medallion Awards from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for an event poster and a program piece. NCMPR members are two-year colleges throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.The department also received Awards of Excellence from the Institutional Advancement Commission of the Fla. Association of Community Colleges for outstanding four-color poster and outstanding recruitment brochure. The work was produced in 2007.
Members of the award-winning team are Graphics Coordinator Kim Scarboro, PR and Web Coordinator Margaret Wilkerson, Information Specialist Desiree James, and Director Trish Hinton. Over the past ten years, the department has won more than 20 state and national awards for creative achievement, including the first place marketing campaign among Florida’s community colleges in 2006.

Welch presents at Gordon College conference Jay Welch, history instructor at North Florida Community College, gave a conference presentation on ‘What matters most to students?” at Gordon College in Barnesville, Ga. on March 28, 2008. The conference attracted approximately 200 instructors from throughout the southeast U.S. Welch’s presentation arose from his classroom experiences using the Socratic Method to teach African-American history. His results answered the conference’s question of “what matters most?”

Hinton receives VSU Outstanding Graduate Award Trish Hinton, executive director of college advancement at North Florida Community College, has been awarded the Dr. Hugh C. Bailey Outstanding Graduate Student Award in the Masters in Public Administration program at Valdosta State University. Hinton, currently a doctoral student in public administration at VSU, completed the MPA in August 2007. The award is given to students who faculty members believe contributed most to the program in and out of the classroom.

Grosskopf completes two-year leadership training John Grosskopf, vice president of academic affairs at North Florida Community College, has concluded a two-year leadership training through The Chair Academy, a program devoted to worldwide leadership training for post-secondary leaders. What began in 1992 as a collaboration of community colleges in Arizona is now a thriving training program with an international venue.
Grosskopf received a Certificate for Advanced Leadership Development after submitting an individual development plan and completing a substantial project. For more information
