Student Drafting Project 2007 - 2008

Project Photos
House Sketch
The house is being sub contracted by the Glee family of Madison, Fla. They are doing all of the work themselves.
  • The house is 5,245 heated sq. ft. and 6,677 covered sq ft. including garage and porches.
  • There are 8 bedrooms, 4.5 baths, and a bonus room upstairs w/ additional bedroom and bath.

NFCC drafting students have had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in seeing how drafting plans "come to life" thanks to the innovative work of instructor, Lauri Newton. She drew up a set of single-family house plans for a local family - the Glees - and students have been tracking the construction. For several months, students have accompanied Ms. Newton to onsite visits during construction. Throughout the course of the project the students have marked construction progress by updating the origional plans with changes and additions, always keeping a set of the original plans on hand for onsite comparisons.

Ms. Newton stesses to her students the importantance of understanding the basic construction techniques. Every week the NFCC drafting class visits the construction site at least twice to discuss various stages of development.

What students have to say about the project...

  • “In this past semester I have obtained a great deal of knowledge in my architectural class, but having the benefit of getting to see the types of drawings that I did on the computer in real life made me more aware of the knowledge that I gained. In actually viewing how a house is put together I am then able to go back to the computer and am able to relate the objects on the screen to the actual object on the house that we visited. Great thanks goes to the Glee’s.” - Andrew B. Turner-

  • “My experience visiting the Glee house was a good one. Not only did we get to see work in progress, and each step of the house as it was being built, but as a drafting student, we could look at the plans and actually see every part of the house that was coming to pass, and relate the two (plans to house). It was also a pleasure visiting the Glee’s as they proudly showed us their house on each visit. We all are grateful for their kindness and willingness to share the building of their house with us.” - David L. Parnell-

  • “Seeing the Glee house being built was a fun and fantastic learning experience. Not only was first hand experience on the Glee house cool, but it was also helpful in many ways. Not only did I get to see a big magnificence house be built from the ground up. I got to learn how it was done.” - Adrienne Conners-

  • “Visiting the Glee house and actually watching something being constructed from plans you have seen is very motivating. To see the actual parts of the foundation, stud wall etc as opposed to just looking at them on a piece of paper is very informative. The Glees are very hospitable and accommodating and I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity.” - Mary Farnell-

  • “Having the opportunity to watch a home, such as the Glee project, being built is a great experience. Since what we create, as draftsmen, is on the computer, sometimes we don’t get to see exactly what we are designing. Watching the Glee house, from pouring the foundation to finishing the interior, really helps students learn the actual process of building a structure and how very important detail can be. “ -Dylan Tiger-

  • “This has been a great learning experience for me this semester. From the drawings to going to see the Glee house being built form the foundation up. It makes a great difference when you actually get to see what you are drawing, and it gives you greater understanding of all the procedures used during building a house.” - Joey Vann-

  • “Going to the Glee house has really helped me understand what I am drawing more.” - J.D. Coody-
