The Music Department of North Florida Community College is proud to present internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, Ming-Jian Fang from Taiwan, in concert Wednesday, April 16. Fang is appearing at the special invitation of Dr. Rebecca Burkart, NFCC Music Director, who became friends with Fang when they were both pursuing doctoral degrees at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. His Madison, Fla. concert follows an appearance at the 20th anniversary of the Classical Guitar Festival at Ball State. Fang will perform two concerts featuring Western classical music: one for NFCC students at noon in the Fine Arts Auditorium on campus and another for members of the public at the Wardlaw-Smith-Goza Mansion, 7 p.m. , 121 NW Marion St, Madison, Fla. Both performances are free. Fang, who received his undergraduate degree in Taiwan, pursued a Doctor of Arts degree from Ball State University in 1988. He was Chairman of the School of Music at Fu-Jen University from 1994-1998, then Dean of the College of Fine Arts from 1998-2007. While at Fu-Jen University, Fang was also Professor of Guitar and developed the university’s first guitar program. He is presently at National Taipei University of Education in the Office of General Affairs. Fang received the 2007 Gold Melody Award from the Taiwanese Government for classical guitar recording; the Outstanding Alumni Award from Ball State University in 1995; and, the International Achievement Award from Ball State in 2007. He has also published Music and Aesthetics-From Tradition to Modern (2007), Western Music History – Ideas and Frameworks (2005), Fernando Sor (2004), and The Illustrated Book of Classical Guitarists (2003). Drs. Rebecca and Arnold Burkart kept up a long-standing friendship with Fang over the years and visited him in Taiwan when Arnold Burkart taught at Taipei Municipal Teacher’s College.
